What is a Lucky Stone or Birthstone?
The Britannica Encyclopedia defines a birthstone as
"gemstone associated with the date of one's birth,
the wearing of which is commonly thought to bring
good luck or health. Supernatural powers have long
been attributed by astrologers to certain gemstones."
Birthstones may be either precious gemstones or semi-precious
ones.
History of Birthstones
From folklore tales, Biblical texts, and the annals
of history, these gems have had a special place in
both the hearts and minds of humanity. Birthstones
have been linked to our dates of birth for centuries.
Different traditions and cultures have associated
different gemstones with each month. Historians believe
that the first written record of gemstones being used
to symbolize something significant came from the Old
Testament Book of Exodus. The breastplate of the High
Priest, Aaron, had twelve gems, one for each of the
tribes of Israel. As time passed, gemstones became
associated first with the Zodiac and then with the
months of the year. The custom of wearing birthstones
seems to have originated in Poland during the late
Middle Ages or Early Renaissance.
The Ayurvedic Birthstone list is from Ayurvedic Indian
Medicine - a type of medicine used for over a thousand
years. If you want a healing gemstone, you may want
to refer this list.
The Mystical Birthstone list was obtained from a Tibetian
book said to be over a thousand years old. It is said
that these gemstones are to help one overcome the
obstacles of their birth month.
The Traditional Birthstone list is a compilation of
birthstones used in different societies dating back
to the 15th century. It contains older birthstones
and is sometimes combined with the modern birthstone
list.
On August 12, 1912, in an effort to standardize the
different sets of birthstones, the American National
Association of Jewelers, Jewelers of America, officially
adopted the Modern Birthstone list. It is currently
the most widely used list in the United States and
many other locations, including Australia and Thailand.
However the list was prepared keeping in mind what
was most commercially viable, according to most reports,
and not necessarily what was traditionally deemed
the proper birthstone for that particular month. The
modern day list is only the most recent list: the
older lists still exist.
