Diamonds, the hardest substance found in nature,
are famous for their extraordinary sparkle and scintillation.
Unlike precious metals such as gold or platinum, diamonds
do not trade as a commodity. One hallmark of the trade in
gem-quality diamonds is its remarkable concentration: wholesale
trade and diamond cutting is limited to a few locations.
92% of diamond pieces cut in 2003 were in Surat (India).
Other important centers of diamond cutting and trading are
Antwerp, London, New York, Tel Aviv, and Amsterdam. Basically,
the price of a diamond is influenced by four factors, commonly
known as "the four C's":
1) Carat - A carat is a unit of weight used for measuring
weight of gemstones and is equal numerically to one fifth
of a gram. The price of a Diamond considerably increases
with the increase in its Carat weight. The price difference
between a one carat diamond and a ten carat diamond is mind
boggling!
2) Colour - The colour plays a significant role in determining
the price of diamonds. Diamonds can be found in various
colours ranging from browns to yellows to greens to pure
white. The most pricy of all diamonds is the natural red
diamond, which is also the most expensive gemstone.
3) Clarity – The Clarity of diamond influences it’s
price as in most other gemstones. A diamond without any
inclusion is costly than one full of them.
4) Cut – The cut of a diamond influences the price
of diamond to a great extent. The diamonds are cut so as
to increase their fire and brilliance. The most common cut
of diamond is the round brilliant cut. The exact proportions
and the symmetry of the facets can greatly fire up the diamond.
Some cuts fetch a greater price than the others… for
example, the Hearts and Arrows cut.
